(Maiden: Bryan)
of Edmonton
May 12, 1923 - Nov 28, 2014
With profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's.
She leaves behind, Jim, her husband of 63 years, son Neil (Susan) of Kelowna, and granddaughters Tara and Niki of Vancouver, as well as many relatives in the Bryan family.
Flo was born on a homestead near McCreary, Manitoba, and later moved to Brandon, where she attended business college. She joined the Royal Canadian Navy on October 5, 1943 and served in various locations, including Halifax during the explosion. After the war she moved to Calgary, where she met and married Jim, and moved to Edmonton, where she was employed as an accountant until 1956 when son Neil was born.
Once Neil was attending school, Flo spent many years as a volunteer at a variety of locations in Edmonton, most notably spending 10 years as treasurer of the Learning Disabilities Society, 10 as treasurer of the Osteoporosis Support Group, and 10 as co-treasurer with Jim at St. Peter's Anglican Church.
Flo and Jim enjoyed travel by RV in Canada and the USA, and also on bus, rail, and boat tours in the UK, Ireland, Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Fiji, and Hawaii, plus a cruise through the Panama Canal.
In 1991 Flo and Jim moved to Horizon Village Glenwood, where Flo became active on the Social Committee.
Our family is deeply appreciative of the wonderfully caring staff, first at the South Terrace and then the Lynnwood Continuing Care Centres, where Flo's ready smile and cheery nature will be remembered. We especially wish to thank Dr. Gee and the staff of 2 Parker Pavilion of the Lynnwood for the exceptional consideration they gave to Flo.
A celebration of Flo's life will be held in Edmonton in the Spring. Her friends and acquaintances are invited to attend to honour this special lady.
When the date is set there will be a notice in the obituary section of the Journal.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, Edmonton Chapter, 10531 Kingsway Ave, Edmonton, AB, T5H 4K1.
