On March 4, 2015, John Pontikes passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years with his family by his side.
John is survived by Helen, his loving and caring wife of 50 years; two children, Peter (Heather) Pontikes and Maria (Bruce) Sinding; five grandchildren Kristiana, Christopher, Emily, Nicole, and Andrew; two sisters Kiki and Nitsa; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada, USA and Greece.
John was predeceased by his parents, Panayiotis and Maria, his sisters Irene, Sophia and Anastasia, and other extended family and friends.
John was born in Kastri, Kynourias, Greece in 1926, immigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Edmonton in 1955. He had a long and successful career in the local restaurant industry and was one of the original founders of Royal Pizza in 1969. John was also actively involved in the Greek community, but above all was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by many.
A special thank you to all the doctors and nurses who participated in his care, especially the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Unit 6 West.
A Prayer Service will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 10831 – 124 Street, Edmonton. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church officiated by Father John Kaoukakis.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations made in John’s memory to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
