of Edmonton, Alberta
Mar 12, 1962 - Nov 17, 2016
It is with heartfelt gratitude to our Lord that on November 17, 2016 at the age of 54 years, Ken Kozyra passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends. Ken succumbed to a long and hard-fought five-year battle to remain with us for as long as he could. Ken is survived by his wife of 32 years, Karen; his son, Kurtis; his father, Stan; his brother, Brian (Gena); his sister, Wendy (Peter); and his niece, Lindsey (Ben). He is also survived by his in-laws, Duwayne and Joanne Haugen; Lisa Haugen (Brent Weller); Kristine Buchholtz (Darrel); Mark Haugen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, and friends. Ken was predeceased by his mother, Dot, in 2006.
Ken was born in Edmonton on March 12, 1962 and grew up in various towns across Alberta, eventually settling in Edmonton. Karen and Ken met at NAIT where they completed a diploma in Biological Sciences, graduating in 1983. Many of their colleagues remain friends today. As an Occupational Health and Safety Officer for most of his career, a 35-year-plus member of ASET, and a Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Ken was dedicated to ensuring the safety of the people who worked around him. It was therefore very hard to accept that at some point during his career, he likely fell prey to the very thing he worked so hard to protect others from. He was an inspiration and mentor to the people who worked with him.
Ken taught us so much about how to live and how to die gracefully, always having us in his mind first and foremost. He was so much more concerned about how his situation would affect others and never concerned about himself.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to either the Cross Cancer Institute or the Myeloma Alberta Support Society. The Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on December 6, 2016 at Bethel Lutheran Church (298 Bethel Drive, Sherwood Park). Interment to be held at a later date.
