Florence Campbell

In Loving Memory of

Florence Campbell

(Maiden: Chambers)
of Edmonton
Apr 21, 1923 - Mar 3, 2017

Florence Campbell was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Before moving to Edmonton her home for more than 60 years, she lived the life of a spouse of a wartime Royal Canadian Air Force pilot, Stan Campbell. Their nomadic life took them to Point Roberts, Lethbridge, and Trenton. As their three daughters were growing up, Florence ensured that their upbringing was founded on a solid education. A particular point of pride was when Florence earned her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Alberta at same time as her daughters were studying there and at the University of British Columbia.

Social justice was a strong theme in Florence’s life. She was a catalyst for change and rallied with people around worthy causes. A social activist and feminist before these terms became commonplace, she participated in organizing a march on Edmonton’s city hall to bring attention to the needs of First Nations citizens. Florence helped organize a community kitchen at the Unitarian Church of Edmonton, where she taught single mothers how to purchase and prepare wholesome food for their families. To celebrate her 90th birthday she hosted a pizza party at the Bissell Centre whose motto is "Empowering Edmonton’s Families in Need".

Florence loved travel, and with friends and family visited many places in Canada and around the world. Some of her travels shaped her insights into the importance of Amnesty International and the purpose for the many letter writing campaigns for social justice in which she participated. From Salt Spring to Europe, Costa Rica to China, Florence enjoyed sharing her stories of travel. Salt Spring was her favourite place to return to time after time with family and friends. She will be remembered as a vibrant and determined person who loved to compete in tennis, bridge, and life.

Florence is survived by her daughters, Susan, Sally (David) and Virginia (Kevin); grandson Nathan; niece Diana (Joe); nephews, Tom (Diane), Brian (Tina), Mike (Vi) and Patrick; along with 3 grand-nieces and 1 grand-nephew. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Florence’s life will be held in Edmonton to be announced at a later date.
