John Vriend

On May 17, 2017 at 93 years of age, John Vriend passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Adriana (Jane) of 68 years, along with 6 children, 27 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by infant daughter, "baby Vriend", and grandson Shane Scheideman.

He was born in Rijswijk, Netherlands and immigrated to Edmonton in 1947 following World War II. Adriana followed him one year later and they were married on August 11, 1948. Gardening, landscape design, and growing nursery stock were his passion. He worked for Lacombe Nurseries for many years until he established his own business, Vriend's Nursery, in 1970. After 13 years, he retired and enjoyed many memorable trips with family and friends.

Family was important to him. John and Adriana raised 6 children, Judy (Russell) Scheideman, Harold (Nelly) Vriend, Joanne (Klaas) Klooster, Margaret (Arie) Bomhof, Corinne (John) Fernhout, and John (Dawn) Vriend. They devoted their lives to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. He knew all 74 by name. He is fondly remembered as Opa.

Opa faithfully walked in the Lord's footsteps. His entire life was a testimony to his faith. He was a shining light for all those around him. His life made us all richer. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." -Proverbs 3:5.
