(Maiden: Simm)
of Edmonton
Jul 30, 2018
On July 30th, one day after her 98th birthday, our Lord called Elizabeth E. ("Betty") Graham home as she quietly rested at the Laurier House in Edmonton. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Richard and Sylvia Barnes and their respective spouses Sandra Barnes and Jim Trimble; her grandsons, Todd and Tye Barnes and their respective spouses Nicole and Courtney Barnes; and her five great-grandsons, Richard, Asher, Christian, Eric and Andrew, as well as other close relatives and friends.
Betty was the first of five children born after her pioneer father from Lancashire was joined by a brave London schoolteacher on the Saskatchewan prairie. Her parents sacrificed to ensure all their children were educated in a profession. Betty, while working as a secretary, met and married in 1942, but sadly lost her beloved husband, Thomas Barnes, in 1971. After a time she began working at the United Church and shortly before retirement she married Edward Graham. Betty and Edward were blessed to be able to travel together to many places in the world. She also found joy as a member of the Grenfell Arts Group, as a square dancer, and in being an active lifetime member of the United Church Women. She will be remembered for the hospitality of her home and her culinary skills. In her later years she was blessed to live in a retirement facility in Winnipeg, and after sixty years in that city moved to Edmonton in 2005.
Betty’s ashes, along with her husband Tom’s ashes, will be interred at Beechmount Cemetery in Edmonton and a Memorial Service will be arranged in the coming weeks for family and friends.
