Henriette Doorenbos of Edmonton passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019 at the age of 92 years.
Henriette was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the daughter of Simon and Elisabeth Doorenbos. Following the Second World War, Henriette became a teacher and taught in the Netherlands for six years. While visiting her Aunt Mary and Uncle Henry Hupkes in Cochrane, Alberta, she decided to stay on their farm for the summer and subsequently immigrated to Red Deer, Alberta. There she looked after children for four years. She subsequently moved to Edmonton where she received a certificate allowing her to teach school based on her qualifications obtained in the Netherlands and her admission to the University of Alberta, Department of Education. She found work as a teacher in a Christian Reformed school in the Beverly neighborhood where she taught for several years. During that time she completed courses at the University of Alberta towards her Bachelor of Education. When she retired from teaching, Henriette worked as a nanny and housekeeper in Edmonton for several prominent families. Henriette was a devout Christian and studied Christian theology at Prairie Bible Institute and Mount Carmel Bible School. She attended Bethel Gospel Chapel for over 50 years. For over 30 years Henriette has resided at Garneau Hall where she was generously supported by the Rasmussen Foundation.
Henriette is survived by sister-in-law, Else Doorenbos; nine nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews, all whom reside in the Netherlands. Special thanks to the staff at Garneau Hall and at Dickinsfield Extended Care for their loving care.
A Memorial Service will be held at Bethel Gospel Chapel, 11461 - 95 St. NW, Edmonton, on Saturday, June 1st, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
