Don Hoover was born Nov. 18, 1942 at home on the farm in Worsley, AB to Lester and Mae Hoover (both deceased). He died on Feb. 25, 2020 quietly at home in Edmonton, AB, just as he wanted, with the love of his family nearby - his wife of 55 years, Muriel (nee Herbig); son, Scott (wife Lori Moffit); and daughter, Nicola (husband Jack Sadorra). He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Zachary and Maya. He is also survived by his sister, Irene (husband Ernie Bass), their children, Todd and Juanita; and an extensive family that he maintained connections with throughout his life.
Don completed grade 12 at the Worsley Consolidated High school and went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) at the University of Alberta in 1964. After which he began his long and industrious career in the business of agriculture.
Don worked with the Government of Alberta from 1964-65 then went on to be a Farm Management Officer with Farm Credit Corp, working in Alberta from 1965-67, PEI from 1967-69 and Ottawa 1969-71. He then returned to Edmonton to join the Sibbald Group in 1971. In 1976 the Sibbald Group merged with Deloitte Haskins and Sells. Don continued with the firm and went on to become a partner in Deloitte and Touche. In 1991 Don and a group of associates formed Serecon, a private agribusiness consulting firm specializing in "the business of Agriculture" providing expertise in agriculture economics and analysis, business analysis and management, marketing, financial management, business and farm valuations and appraising.
Among his many distinguishing career highlights, Don was the President of the Alberta Institute of Agrologists (1981-82), received a Professional Recognition Award from the Alberta Institute of Agrologists in 1985, was the President of the Agriculture Institute of Canada 1989-1990, and received the Alberta Institute of Agrologists Lifetime Membership Award in 2017. Don had many professional designations including AACI, P.Ag, CMC and CAC.
Don was a mentor and a leader. He demonstrated integrity and professionalism and earned the respect of all he met. He was passionate about his farm, his work, his friends, and foremost his family. He loved to hike, bike, ski and camp. He enjoyed travel to places near and far. Don leaves shoes too big to fill. He will be missed.
It is with deep regret the family of Donald Hoover has decided to cancel the Memorial Service scheduled for October 30, 2020, due to COVID-19.
