Feb 4, 1932 - Jul 27, 2022
Herman Wiersma, age 91 years, passed away on July 27, 2022 at the Misericordia Hospital.
Herman was born in Oosthem, Friesland, Holland, the youngest of 11 children. During WWII, he provided food for his family by catching fish and birds' eggs. He emigrated to Canada in 1953 and began a life of many careers, the first of which was on a farm in Saskatchewan. He met the love of his life, Lenie, at the Dutch Reform Church and married her in 1955. He was father to 4 children. He loved taking his family to Pigeon Lake and the Okanogan in their tent trailer for summer holidays. Backyard barbeques were a favourite for everyone.
On the fort road, he raised vegetables and livestock. He worked on the University farm. He became a contractor and poured concrete for some of the most iconic buildings in Edmonton. He was a maintenance man and then manager of Strathcona Place for over 20 years and retired in 1994.
He and Lenie enjoyed travelling to Holland and Hawaii (especially), ice fishing and gardening in retirement.
Herman leaves to remember him his children: Fred (Karen) Wiersma, Helen Wiersma, Jake (Audrey) Wiersma; grandchildren: Terry, Jody, and Ryan Mosicki, Anna and Joshua Wiersma; and great-grandchildren: Alex, William and Elliena Mosicki.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lenie; and youngest child, Teresa Wiersma.
Herman will be cremated and interred at Westlawn Cemetery with his wife and daughter. At his request, there will be no service.
Thank you to the hard-working caregivers at Jasper Place Long Term Care, who took care of him for 2 years, and the doctors and nurses at the Misericordia Hospital, who made his last days comfortable.
