Helen Audrey Steel
1924 - 2022
It is with great sadness, but also peace, that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Helen Audrey Steel on Christmas Day.
Audrey is survived by her four daughters: Nancy, Debora (Byron), Terry, and Lori (Andrew). Her three grandsons: Ryan (Shauna), Kevin (Candace), and Spencer. Step-grandchildren: Glen (Kelly), Tara, Brett (Lindsay); great-grandchildren: Devin, Nash, Katrina, Khloe, and George; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband Charles Mervyn Steel; siblings: Eugene, Myrtle, Ruth, Nan, Marguerite, Mildred, and Eloise; son-in-law Dalton and step-grandson Greg.
Audrey was born in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan the youngest child of the late Ernest and Margaret Tew (nee Ryan) and grew up in Swift Current where she graduated high school. After high school, and during wartime, Audrey moved to Calgary and began working in the jewellery industry, first with Martin's Jewellers and then Henry Birks and Sons. Audrey married Merv in 1947 and they settled in Edmonton where they raised their family. Audrey took a break from working outside the home when her children were small, returning later to work many years for Peoples Jewellers.
Audrey enjoyed curling, often as skip, golf with lady friends, and played bridge for 35 years. Audrey and Merv had season tickets to the Edmonton Eskimos for 40 years; Audrey loved to watch the Oilers and we learned not to call her when there was a game on! Audrey and Merv had a love for animals and over the years welcomed pets Lucky, Scottie, Bibsy, and Buddy into the family. Mum was interested in politics and world news, which she followed closely until recent times.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shepherd's Care Millwoods for their compassionate care of mum over these last almost seven years. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Grewal for always being there â€" we are forever grateful.
A Celebration of Life for Audrey will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Foster & McGarvey, 10011 114 St. Edmonton.
Floral tributes are gratefully declined. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Shepherd's Care Millwoods, 6620 28 Ave NW Edmonton, T6K 2R1 or the charity of one's choice.
