Duwayne Haugen

The family of Duwayne Haugen â€" beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend â€" rejoices that his precious Saviour Jesus came on March 19, 2023 to take him home and to relieve him from his suffering, while also grieving his acutely felt absence from our lives.

Duwayne is survived by the love of his life and his wife of 62 years, Joanne; daughters, Karen, Lisa (Brent), Kristine (Darrel); son, Mark (Rebecca); his grandchildren, Kurtis (Mariah), Kaytlin (Tim), Joshua (Madysan), Nathan (Rebecca), Quinten, Taryn (Paul), Carly, Zachary (Heather), and Amanda; his four great-granddaughters, Oaklyn, Tessa, Kinsley, and Gemma; brothers, Bud (Pat) and David (Trish); sister, Janice (David); sisters-in-law, Lorraine, Raymonde (Johnny), and Louise (Vic); Carly's mother, Sheila; as well as innumerable nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Obert and Esther; his stepfather, Kelly; his brother, Tom; Joanne's parents, Louis and Rose Tremblay; her siblings, Olive (Neville) Parry, Norm (Nora) Tremblay, and Jacques (Gertie) Tremblay; and his very special son-in-law, Ken Kozyra.

Duwayne was born in 1937 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the second of his parents' five children. While attending the University of Alberta, Duwayne met his soulmate, Joanne, whom he married in 1960, and they welcomed Karen, Lisa, Kristine, and Mark, as well as a succession of cats and dogs over the next few decades as he worked first in sales and eventually as a realtor.

As a lifelong learner, he was a man of many interests â€" marine fish, model railroads, bonsai trees, theology, video editing, vitamins and supplements (before that was even trending) â€" teaching himself Visual Basic on his Texas Instruments TI99-4A ("the best computer ever made") and amazing his friends and family with the wonders of the first word processing program they had ever encountered. A man of deep faith with a clever sense of humour, Duwayne considered Joanne and his family to be the centre of his life and was always willing to drop everything whenever any one of them were in need.

Thank you to all who cared for Duwayne over the past several months: Dr. Abraham and the team at the Cross Cancer Institute; the nurses (Jenna, Leah, and Rhonda) of the Pod F Palliative Home Care Team in Edmonton; Dr. Leung of the Palliative Home Care Assessment Team; Dr. David Fields, whom Duwayne considered to be "the most caring and compassionate doctor he'd ever had"; and the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at Pilgrims Hospice, whose absolutely incredible and amazing support and care made it possible for Duwayne's final days to be as comfortable as possible.

A Celebration of Duwayne's life will take place on Monday, May 1 at 10:00 am at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park (298 Bethel Drive).

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to the Pilgrims Hospice Society, 9808 148 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 3E8.
