On April 15th, 2023, Joe MacIsaac, our wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully with family by his side under the care of the staff at Grandview. He was 94 years young.
Joe was predeceased by his wife, Peggy; daughters, Joan and Mary-Pat; parents, Dan and Marie; and brother, Allie.
He leaves to mourn his children: Molly (John) Chu, Dan (Linda), Larry (Betty), Lisa (Pat) Carpenter, and Paul (Jocelyn); thirteen grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; siblings in PEI: Hubert, Miriam, and Vera. He was also a beloved uncle and friend to many.
Joe was born in Prince Edward Island and always remained a son of the red soil, visiting his home as often as he could for a feed of lobster with biscuits and tea at his family's table or a bonfire on the north shore. He was a warm hearted, generous man with great faith and family values that were the hallmark of his life. His sense of humor and fun was evidenced throughout his life, which endeared him to many. His positive outlook on life brought him through the tough times and gave him strength to live each day with appreciation. He was always grateful and spoke kindly to people with politeness and consideration. He offered help to those who needed it and supported those who were struggling.
After he graduated from St Dunstan's University in Charlottetown, Joe left PEI to work at Jasper Park Lodge in the Canadian Rockies for the summer in the early 50's, and it was there that he met his "Gentle Peggy" and fell in love. He followed her back to her home in Ottawa where they were married and settled down to raise a family of seven children.
As an insurance adjuster for General Motors Insurance Corporation, Joe was transferred to different cities; Kingston, L'ile Perrot, Burlington and then back to Ottawa until his final transfer to Edmonton in 1976, where the family remained.
Joe was diagnosed with dementia in his 80's but continued to retain his values and humor and dedication to his family with grace that was inspirational even after his recent placement to long term care. Right to the end he knew the words to hundreds of songs and could recite long poems from memory with an acting flair that was both entertaining and incredible. Visiting Joe was a joyful experience as he always wanted to be sure his guests were having fun too.
In the end Joe slipped away quietly and gracefully as he had lived his life. Though we are sad that he is gone we also feel that the values and examples of joyful fortitude he gave us are worth celebrating with joy. It is exactly the way Joe would want it to be.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 210 Haddow Close NW, Edmonton, with interment of the urn to follow at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, 106 Street and 53 Avenue NW, Edmonton.
