It is with deepest sorrow and endless love that we mourn the loss of Kenneth, who passed away peacefully in his sleep late in the evening of Friday, April 26, 2024, in Edmonton at the age of 90 years.

Ken was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Violet Lindgren nee Fidgett; his father, Victor Lindgren; mother, Elsie Lindgren nee Bottorff; sister, Nellie Johanson (Herb) and daughter, Sonja Kretzschmar. He is survived by his daughters, Lynda Shockey (Harley) and Brenda Reid (Mike); son, Roger Lindgren (Cheri); and son-in-law, Tony Kretzschmar (Cathy). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be dearly missed by many close friends and extended family connections.

Born and raised in Ferintosh, Alberta, Ken moved with his family to Edmonton in 1948. Following high school, Ken continued to use the carpentry skills he had developed working with his father, taking an apprenticeship and earning his carpenter’s qualifications, before working as a draftsman with Canadian Superior Oil. The majority of Ken’s professional career was spent with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he rose to the role of Director of Physical Plant, and ultimately with Westerra Institute of Technology where he retired in 1988.

Attending the First Church of God in Edmonton, where his father was the pastor, he would meet his future wife, Vi; they would marry in 1954. Throughout the years, Ken was very much involved in the leadership of the Church, as a Church Elder, participating in various committees for the betterment of the community. His involvement extended beyond the immediate community, as he took on further senior roles within the Western Canada Church of God. Humble and generous by nature, Ken’s faith was evidenced in his unflagging compassion and kindness, which never failed to touch those around him. In their travels, Ken and Vi would frequently return with tales of the friends they had made of strangers.

Ken and Vi always loved family vacations which began with camping, then with their trailer and later their motorhome. As their children began families of their own, they built a cabin at Pigeon Lake as a family gathering place they enjoyed for many years. Later, numerous international destinations became places where their family would once again come together. Locales such as China, India, the Maldives, England, Sweden, and Italy were enjoyed.

The family would like to extend gratitude to Ed De Guzman and all the staff at MacTaggart Place, for the great care and comfort which they gave to Ken in his time there. A special thanks also to Dr. Varghese at Grey Nuns Community Hospital, whose compassion helped to ease the end of Ken’s journey.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Foster & McGarvey Funeral Home (10011 114 St NW, Edmonton), with a private graveside service to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Janelle Stone of Holyrood Community Church, Edmonton.
