With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bruce Edmund Hanwell at the age of 89. Bruce passed away at Touchmark in Edmonton, in Emerald Memory Care on May 30, 2024.
Bruce was born in High River in 1935 and grew up in Blackie, Alberta. Attending the University of Alberta, he graduated as a chemical engineer and had a long, successful career in Alberta's oil industry. He retired in Victoria, British Columbia, and enjoyed spending numerous years travelling and enjoying the beach life in Maui. His ukulele-playing will always be remembered, with all of us singing along to one of our favorite songs; “Going to Hanna Maui,” inside the beachside church.
Having celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary May 2nd of this year, Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Hanwell (nee Farmer); his brother, Bob (Hanwell); niece and nephew, Sharon and Scott Hanwell; three children: Tannis Montalbetti, Kent Hanwell, and Margo Lacoursiere; eight grandchildren: Kyle, Rhian, and Malory Tate, Jacques, Anique, Luc, and Gabrielle Lacoursiere, and Dylan Hanwell; one great- grandchild, Rory Tate; as well as extended family members and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at Emerald Memory Care at Touchmark in Edmonton.
