It is with immeasurable sorrow and immense love that we mourn the passing of Michael Hiemstra, who took his own life on September 14, 2024, at the age of 37. Beloved son of John and Shirley, and brother to Janna (Colin) and Kristen.
Michael was a bright and sensitive spirit with boundless curiosity and an incredible sense of humour. He cared deeply for the world in all its complexity and strove to learn and understand the mysteries of creation. He felt most free when exploring the wilderness and had a profound desire to live a life that embodies care for the environment - including everything from the smallest ant to collapsing climate systems. He had a passion for learning about nature, and an incredible green thumb that enabled him to grow almost anything, anywhere. Growing life brought him joy, and he treasured relationships with others through learning about and nurturing plants. Michael was also skilled with his hands, and his thoughtfulness translated into artistic care for the things that he made.
Michael's smile and ability to crack a joke at just the right time was a true pleasure. Being with him often lightened life, and his deadpan wit was one of his delightful ways of giving to others. Being with him in his seriousness could be hard as he felt life deeply, but his drive to confront injustices also helped to open new ways and ideas of engaging with the world. Michael met challenges and approached problems with a sharp mind and loving care. Many treasured their time with Michael because of this and felt grateful for the curiosity and wonder that he renewed in us.
Michael’s greatest challenge in the last years was struggling with depression and mental illness, which significantly affected his life. Over the last months, his paranoid delusions caused him so much fear that he felt trapped and could not keep going. His parents and siblings tirelessly showed their love and support to Michael during these years and tried to help him in seeking and accessing support. He was unable to comprehend that he was not well and couldn’t seek or accept the help that he so desperately needed.
Michael was still able to show love, compassion, and consideration throughout his pain, and he was grateful for his family and friends. His life, in all its many joys and its suffering, included so many people who loved him and held him dear. He will be greatly missed.
Michael’s name means “before the face of God”, and though his family misses him terribly, they know and trust that Jesus walks with all those who suffer and take comfort in the image of Michael being in the peace that passes all understanding.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. at 51514, Range Rd 271, Spruce Grove, AB, T7Y 1G5. All are welcome.
