(Maiden: Halkier)
of Edmonton
Apr 7, 1912 - May 26, 2011
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister and auntie.
While Dorothy spent the last 7 years in Edmonton, she lived much of her adult life in Calgary. Dorothy was born on the family homestead in Theodore, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Standard, Gadsby and Halkirk. She graduated from Camrose Normal School and taught in one-room schoolhouses in Little Knife, Daisybank and Veldt prior to her marriage to Donald McKinnon in 1939. After the outbreak of the war, Dorothy accompanied Donald to the various British Commonwealth Air Training Plan communities where he was stationed. Following the war, Dot and Don made their home in Calgary, where son Terry was born. After the work of raising her family was done, Dorothy kept busy curling, golfing and playing bridge. Terry, now a retired math teacher, says Dorothy was the best math teacher he ever had.
Dorothy is survived by son Terry (Marilyn) of Nakusp; granddaughters Andrea and Laura of Vancouver; sister Vivian Morrison of Calgary; brother Ken (Nadia) Halkier of Edmonton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family remembrance will be held.
