of Edmonton
Dec 19, 1933 - Aug 17, 2012
Guy Demarino has undertaken his last trip. Surrounded by his family, a lifetime of travelling came to an end for him on August 17th, 2012, but he can’t tell you where he will end up. Hopefully, a nice place! He is survived by wife Judy and daughter Kim, both in Edmonton, and by son Matthew, daughter-in-law Andrea and grandchildren Peter and Juliana, all in Calgary. He is also survived by brother Renato and sister- in- law Giuliana both in Florence Italy. Predeceased by father Matteo, mother Odilia. Guy was born in Italy in 1933 and survived WW2 in Florence, which he left in 1955. After vagabonding in Europe and living in Norway and elsewhere for a while, he crossed the Atlantic and came to Canada in 1956. He worked for years in Quebec and Ontario underground mines, saving money towards his goal of becoming a journalist here. He did, after attending the University of Western Ontario, graduating with a History and English B.A. and a post-graduate Journalism diploma. After stints in Toronto and Oakville newspapers, he came West in 1963, to the Edmonton Journal, where he quickly rose to senior beats, covering police, courthouse, city hall, and provincial politics. His love of food and wine led him to become the first restaurant reviewer in Western Canada, becoming famous for his Dining Out with Demarino weekly column in The Journal. He also was selected for a one-year Southam fellowship at the University of Toronto’s Massey College – then mastered by Robertson Davies. Later, after returning to Edmonton, he was promoted to the Southam News Services bureau in Ottawa, covering federal elections and many national and international events for five years. Back in Edmonton once again - yes, he did like it here! – he continued at The Journal until 1985, ending up as travel editor, a title he carried to The Edmonton Sun, where he moved in 1985. For the next 15 years, he saw many parts of the world he hadn’t yet seen. A fabulous job! When the new century came, Guy thought it was a good time to stop - but not to stop travelling - which he continued to do with wife Judy. Cremation has taken place. Guy will now reside in Mount Pleasant cemetery. He hopes donations will go to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Alberta Division, P.O. Box 38029, RPO Capilano, Edmonton, AB, T6A 3Y6, Thank you. Guy’s family would like to say a special thanks to all the caregivers from the Southeast Home Care Team. A celebration of life will be held at Sorrentino’s Restaurant (Little Italy), 10844 - 95th Street, Edmonton from 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday August 25th.
