On August 9, 2014, Brian Durling’s well used heart gave out after a lifetime of sharing his home and offering endless hospitality to a legion of friends and family. He was well known for his wonderful sense of humor, and he maintained it right until the end; he always had a smile for family members over a bedside joke even when illness prevented him from being the one to tell it.
Brian leaves a long legacy. He was a fantastic cook – never using a recipe, famous for his Grampie Pancakes & Eggs and fried chicken recipes. His secret? Cook everything in bacon grease and a 50 year old cast iron pan. Brian was the life of any party or event; he loved to sing, and family gatherings often included song after song around the kitchen table. He was incredibly knowledgeable about many topics – he was who you went to before there was Google.
Brian forged an 85 year trail of laughter, generosity, compassion and wisdom and touched the hearts of all he met.
His passing also initiated a sharp decline in the stock of Windsor Canadian, The National Enquirer, The Globe and The Examiner.
He will be greatly missed by his children Karen (Ken), Kevin (Julie), Shar (Steve) and Greg, his 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and the many friends and family members who knew and loved him. He was predeceased in 2011 by Glenna, his beloved wife of 60 years.
Many thanks to the caregivers and staff at the Sturgeon Hospital and Citadel Mews for their excellent care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial will be held with 3 generations of his family celebrating his life.
In lieu of flowers, please know that Brian Durling’s was a life well lived and in his memory – hold those that you love a little closer.
