of Edmonton, Alberta
Sep 7, 2014
Our beloved mom, grandmother and very best friend, slipped away peacefully on September 7, 2014 at the age of 102 after a short stay in hospital.
Nettie is survived by her children, Marcia Albrecht, Marlene Hendriks-Albrecht and Marianne (Jack) Schofield; grandchildren, Joanne Schofield, JP Schofield, Peter Hendriks and Christopher Alexander (Lori); and great-grandchild, MacKenzie.
Nettie was predeceased by her loving husband, Peter.
Born in Winnipeg, Nettie grew up in Transcona, Manitoba and after completing her formative years at Central School, attended Progress Business College in Winnipeg. A secretarial certificate qualified her as personal assistant to Mr. R.L. Towle, founder of the Dominion Beauty and Trade Schools in Canada.
In 1937, a transfer to the Edmonton side of the operation saw Nettie in a managerial position with the Marvel Beauty Schools. Working in the field of beauty culture from 1927 to 1975, Nettie had been instrumental in establishing a high level of professionalism for the industry – the Marvel Hairdressing Schools – Edmonton-Calgary, and the American Beauty Clinic.
Nettie was a member of the governing board (1967-1969) for the National-American Cosmetology Schools, Inc., and held a directorship (1973-1975) for the Teachers’ Educational Council. In 1975 she was elected President of the National Association of Beauty Schools (Canada).
Her influence extended beyond the field of beauty culture with her involvement in the Edmonton Quota Club, Shriners Children’s Hospital, Evelyn Unger School, and Order of the Eastern Star.
Nettie’s interests were wide and varied – a collector of Canadian/European Art, antiques, music (she played piano/mandolin), an avid reader and collector of literary works.
Nettie, forged countless friendships, touched the lives of many, and gave unconditional love to her children.
At Nettie’s request, no funeral services will be held. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
