of Edmonton
Feb 23, 1923 - Aug 29, 2013
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true Scottish gentleman.
Left to mourn his passing are his three sons, Ian (Diane), Craig (Vicky), and Scott (Audrey); and eight grandchildren, Quinn (Catherine), Kyle (Andrea), Kenny, Stephanie, Chris (Megan), Caterina, Adam, and Nathan. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret in 2005; sister, Sylvia in 1994; and brother, John in 1940. Born in Kirkcowan Wigtownshire, Scotland, and raised in Dumfries, Dad was educated at Dumfries Academy and the Royal Air Force Training School Halton.
He proudly served his country in World War II and during his tour of duty in Italy, was able to study singing, a skill and passion he enjoyed for over 60 years in Edmonton. He sang with the Edmonton Light Opera for several years, as well as in various churches, the radio, Masonic Lodges, and throughout the Scottish community. Menzies, as many in the Scottish community knew him by, had a 62 year affiliation with the Edmonton Burns Club and performed each year without fail from 1951 to 2011.
Prior to retiring, Dad was a loyal and dedicated employee of the City of Edmonton, ending his career as the Director of the Building Inspection Branch. Dad was blessed with a quick wit, tremendous compassion, and genuine personality, and as a result, attracted a similar circle of friends which suited him nicely.
Dad was involved in various organizations including, Past President and Life member of the Edmonton Burns Club, Past President of the Tarboltan Club, Probus Club, Knox United Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Halton Royal Air Force Association (Life Member).
Reverend Harry Currie will officiate at a Memorial Service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, 10025 - 105 Street, Edmonton.
A special thank you to the caring and compassionate staff of the EMS and Station 51 of the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Donations in memory of Menzies may be made to the Parkinson Alberta Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
